[DJ-Blog Interview] Joe Silva (Neves Music)

The Canadian music producer and DJ Joe Silva amazed me with his new song “Can’t hold back” (feat. Pucona). It’s the second release on his own label “Neves Music”.

joesilva

When did you start DJing and how did you develop your passion for house music?

I had fallen in love with house music in the early ’90’s. In Canada, where I live, clubs didn’t play the music as loud or with such good sound systems as in European cities. So when I first heard the sound system at Kremlin in Lisbon, it was a life changing moment for me. I saw the effect that the music was having on people. It was a very liberating and positive experience. I wanted to make music like that.

I was already writing tracks just for fun so when I returned home, I started writing house tracks. In ‘95 I began releasing them on my own label Purespace Records, under the name X Nation. I had four vinyl releases and then started releasing my tracks on other labels.

Around the same time I bought two old Technic 1200’s, which I still have, and started buying records. My first payed DJ gig was new years eve 1999.

Some of your productions were released on well known labels like Guesthouse, Nordic Trax and Lunatic Jazz. Why did you decide to establish your own label Neves Music?

I’ve always been a do-it-yourself personality. I like to know and understand all the details of everything. So it was natural for me to want to do it all myself in releasing music.

The internet makes it easier but it’s still very difficult to get noticed as a small digital label. For me it doesn’t matter. I’m not trying to sell lots of music. I just want to have the music available.

Why did you choose the name “Neves” Music for you label?

Neves means “snow” in Portuguese. There’s lots of it where I live in Canada, so it seemed like a good choice. My previous label was Purespace, but I use that name for my film scoring work now.

In the last eight years you produced different styles of house music. Some of your tracks are funky, some are deep or jazzy and some have influences of tech house. I think you combined these music styles in Cant Hold Back very good. In which musical direction will your next production lead?

Tech house is mainly what I like to produce. I bounce back and forth between funky warm grooves and darker tech stuff.

I’m working on the next EP which I’m doing with an talented R&B singer named Flo. That may have a darker sound to it and may include a downtempo cut as well. Should be released summer 2009.

Could you tell us some of your tour dates?

I don’t have any DJ tours planned. I enjoy DJ’ing locally but I’m more interested in producing for now.

Is there anything else you want to tell us?

Yes, you can find out about the latest Neves Music releases on my website nevesmusic.com and you can download my DJ sets at nevesmusic.com/mixes

Thank you for the interview Joe. I can’t wait to hear new music on neves music.

It was my pleasure. Thank you for your interest.
